Definitions
Pallet- a platform, used to store, stack, and ship goods, that consists of top and bottom deck boards and stringers
Skid- a platform, used to store, stack, and ship goods, that consists of top deck boards and runners. No bottom deck boards on this platform.
Top/Bottom deck boards- top or bottom component of the pallet deck that is oriented perpendicular to the stringer
Stringer- continuous, solid or notched beam-component of a pallet that is used to support deck boards
Runner- continuous, solid or notched beam-component of a skid that is used to support top deck boards
Length of pallet or skid- stringer or runner direction
Width of pallet or skid- deck board direction
Notch- cutout in lower portion of the stringer to allow for forklift entry
2-way- Pallet or skid only accessible from the front and back
4-way- Pallet or skid accessible from the front, back, and sides via notches in the stringer
Uniform Load- does the item that is being placed on the pallet or skid cover the entire top portion of the pallet or skid
Racked pallet- a pallet or skid that will be placed on a rack for storage
Stacked pallet- a pallet or skid, with the product being shipped on the pallet or skid, to be placed on another pallet or skid with product on it
Heat Treated pallet- a pallet that is heat treated to 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes to comply with the ISPM-15 standard
Wooden Crate- nailed or screwed pine horizontal and vertical boards that surround the item being shipped, but no plywood is being used. Therefore, the item is open to the elements.
Wooden Box- nailed or screwed pine and plywood that totally covers the item being shipped. The item shipped is not subjected to the elements.
Runners- Pine boards on the bottom of the box or crate that allow it to be picked up or skidded
Cleating- Wood that is nailed vertically or horizontally to the plywood of a box that provides stacking strength, stiffness, and place to nail when assembling the box or crate
Width of the Box or Crate- deck board direction
Depth of Box or Crate- runner direction
Lid Tacked- Lid lightly nailed onto box to allow accessibility into the box or crate
Box to lift off of base- Assembled front, back, sides, and lid lightly nailed onto base of the box to allow accessibility into the box or crate
Knocked Down box/crate- Components of box or crate are assembled, but the box or crate is not delivered assembled as a box or crate. Purchaser of the box or crate will assemble the front, back, sides,
and lid onto to the base once the item is fastened to the base of
the box or crate.
